Five years with SUMM — the only crypto tax software I’ve stopped shopping around for.
I don’t often write software reviews, but for SUMM (previously known as Crypto Tax Calculator), I’m goign to make an exception. I’ve been using SUMM since back when it was Crypto Tax Calculator, and it’s saved me enough weekends over the years that staying quiet started to feel ungrateful.

How I got here
I accumulated crypto the way most people did — gradually, across too many platforms, with no thought whatsoever for what it would look like at tax time. When I finally sat down to sort it out, I had activity across 8 exchanges and 22 wallets going back to 2020.
I tried a spreadsheet first. I want to be honest about how badly that went: I lost over 50 hours to it before giving up somewhere around a DeFi swap, a bridge, and an exchange that had already shut down and taken its export history with it.
The volume isn’t what makes it hard. It’s the transactions that don’t map cleanly onto anything a spreadsheet understands. A swap that’s simultaneously a disposal and an acquisition. Staking rewards arriving in dribs and drabs every day. A transfer between two of your own wallets that looks exactly like a sale unless something knows better. Get enough of those stacked up and a spreadsheet stops being a tool and becomes a liability.
I found SUMM through a friend in the crypto field. Connected everything, waited, and got back something that actually made sense. That was 2021. I’ve used it every tax season since.
What it does well
The integrations are genuinely extensive. Most of my exchanges and wallets connected directly with no fuss. This is the part every competitor claims and few deliver — the long tail of smaller exchanges and less common chains is where tools usually fall over.
Custom CSV import saves you when an exchange is gone. This is the feature I’d point to if someone asked me why I stayed. Anyone who’s been in crypto more than a few years has history on a platform that no longer exists, or one whose export format is nonsense. Being able to build a custom CSV and bring that history in anyway is the difference between a complete set of books and a permanent gap you have to explain later.
It handles a multi-year backfill. I brought in [number] years at once rather than reconstructing season by season. Some of it was manual, and I won’t pretend that part was fun — but it was possible, which is more than I can say for the alternatives.
Support is the real product. Every crypto tax tool eventually hits a transaction it can’t classify. What separates them is what happens next. When I got stuck on [the issue], [name, or “the support team”] worked through it with me properly — not a canned reply pointing at a help article, but someone who understood both the software and the underlying tax question, staying with it until the numbers were right.
Your history carries forward. Prior years’ classifications and cost basis stay put. Re-importing everything from scratch each season would have driven me to something else years ago.
What’s not perfect
I’d be skeptical of a five-star review with nothing in this section, so:
Pricing is tied to transaction volume, which means the more active you’ve been the more you pay — right when the tool is most valuable to you. I’m on the Top Tier dude to the number of transactions I have. It’s defensible, but it’s worth knowing before you commit.
There’s a learning curve. The first session is genuinely daunting. Once you understand how it thinks about transactions it gets much easier, but budget an evening to get oriented rather than expecting to be done in twenty minutes.
Some manual work is unavoidable. Not really the software’s fault — it’s the nature of reconstructing years of scattered on-chain activity — but if you’re expecting to press a button and be finished, adjust your expectations.
Would I recommend it?
With one qualification. If you made a dozen trades on one exchange last year, this is more tool than you need and the price will annoy you.
But if your activity is spread across multiple platforms, or you’ve touched DeFi at all, or you’re sitting on a backlog you’ve been avoiding for years — this is the thing that makes it tractable. That last case especially. The people who most need software like this are the ones dreading the catch-up, and SUMM is built for exactly that job.
Five stars because across 5 tax seasons it has never once failed me at the moment it mattered, and because when I’ve been stuck, an actual person has helped me get unstuck. Both are rarer than they should be.
